In TCP/IP and and UDP networks, a port is an endpoint to a locical connection. The port number defines the type of the port. Examples are port 80 for HTTP, 21 for FTP etc.

Well Known Port Numbers: The Well Known Ports are assigned by the The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and on most systems can only be used by system or root processes or by programs executed by privileged users. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is responsible for the global coordination of the DNS Root, IP addressing, and other Internet protocol resources. Port range in number from 0 to 65536, however, only ports numbers 0 to 1024 are reserved for privileged services and are designated as well-known ports.
